What is the Cub Scout Program?
Cub Scouts is a year-round program through Scouting America, designed to meet the needs of young boys and girls ages 5-10 and their families. The program offers fun and challenging activities that promote character development and physical fitness. Youth can begin as Lion Cubs once they start Kindergarten, then move into Tiger (1st grade) then move into the Wolf (2nd grade or age 8) and Bear Cub Scout programs (3rd grade or age 9), and Webelos Scouts (4th grade) and Finally Arrow of Light (AOL) (5th grade or age 10). They then transition into Scouts BSA.
In the National Capital Area Council, Cub Scouts and their families enjoy participating in age-appropriate camping opportunities, service projects, games, and other fun activities that guide boys and girls through Cub Scout’s Core Values and give them a sense of personal achievement. Parents, leaders, and friends play an active role in the program as they encourage boys and girls to live by the Cub Scout Motto: “Do Your Best!”
What is the Time Commitment ?
Our Pack understands the busy schedules of kids today and our Scouting “Year” runs from September through May. Our Dens (grade specific) usually meet the first Monday of each month. Our Pack (all the Dens) meet the third Friday of each month. In addition, we usually try and plan 1-2 other activities each month. The great thing about the Cub Scout Program is that is designed to be family friendly and if you can’t make a meeting or activity that’s okay. All the adventures can be done at home, if necessary.
Who Can Participate, Does Your Pack Welcome Girls?
The most common questions we get from perspective families are around participation.
We often get asked if our Pack has any girls and as of 8/2026 we do not, but we are more than open to having them join and have quite a few female leaders. Also, we have several siblings who come to Pack Meetings and participate in activities. Overall, we are a family oriented Pack and welcome everyone to participate.
How Much Does it Cost?
Cub Scouts cost less than $300 for the year as there are Membership Dues (approximately $165) that go to Scouting America and our Council (National Capital Council) and then there are Pack Dues ($85) which go directly to the Pack and help cover the costs of our awards and activities like the Pinewood Derby. As a Pack we do run 1-2 fundraising events each year to help keep our Pack Dues as low as possible.
There is financial aid available if needed as we don’t want the cost to prevent a child from experiencing all that Scouting has to offer.
What About Uniforms?
Our Pack has a “Class B” shirt and each Scout will get one when they first join. This is a T-Shirt they can wear to all of our activities. Additional shirts can be purchased as needed.
The “Class A” uniform for a Cub Scout includes a Blue Shirt, Den Hat and Den Neckerchief and those can be purchased at the Scout Store. For the Shirt, we recommend that you get one a little large so they can grow into it. Assuming the Scout intends to move onto Boy Scouts, they will want to purchase the Tan Shirt as they enter their Arrow of Light Den (5th Grade). There are also Blue Scout pants that can be purchased but most of our Scouts wear shorts or jeans instead.
Please Note: Our Pack does not require a Scout to have a Class A uniform to participate and we do encourage “hand me downs” especially for hats and neckerchiefs which tend to get lightly used.
